Spraining the ankle is a common injury among athletes, annually affecting millions of people around the globe. EXO-L prevents spraining in a new way, based on the body’s own ligaments. A ligament is a band of tough tissue preventing our joints from overstretching. The EXO-L uses this principle and only restricts the movement of your ankle when you are about to sprain, leaving you with complete freedom of movement.
To ensure the perfect fit needed for the product to work, a 3D-scan is used. After your ankle is scanned the data is used to create your personal EXO-L. This works so well that the resulting level of comfort and freedom seduces some athletes to start wearing it proactively.
In an ongoing R&D project we are working both on the general design of the product as on the automation of the product design. The Exo-L is a great example of a tailor-made product based on the proper usage of 3D-scanning and 3D-printing. The combination of these two techniques creates an area of affordable tailor made prosthetics of which we are going to see a lot more in the future…
